The National Road Safety Observatory (ONSR) issued a warning on Thursday urging all road users to adhere to strict safety measures due to the severe weather conditions affecting several regions of the country.
Rain, Snow and Strong Winds
According to the ONSR, the country is experiencing scattered rainfall, at times thunderous and heavy, especially in the far north-west.
Some snowfall is also expected over the western highlands, while strong north-westerly winds are blowing across the northern and central regions as well as coastal areas, increasing the level of risk on the roads.
Urgent Safety Recommendations for Drivers
The ONSR called on all drivers to exercise heightened vigilance and comply with the following safety measures:
- Reduce speed and adapt driving to weather conditions.
- Increase the safety distance to avoid collisions.
- Avoid crossing flooded valleys (oueds) or areas where water levels are rising.
- Check wipers and lights to ensure proper functioning.
- Avoid sudden braking to prevent hydroplaning.
Low Areas and Poor Visibility: How to React
The observatory also advised road users to:
- Avoid low-lying areas prone to rapid water accumulation.
- Seek a safe place to stop if visibility drops.
- Switch on hazard lights in case of limited visibility.
- Be cautious of strong wind gusts that may destabilize vehicles.
- Ensure phone batteries are fully charged before travelling.
- Leave earlier than planned or postpone travel, especially in the far north where weather conditions are most severe.
The ONSR stressed that vigilance and caution remain the most effective ways to reduce road accidents during periods of severe weather instability.
