Over 180 arrested amid Hong Kong protests

Police fired pepper spray and arrested over 180 people in Hong Kong as masses took to the streets in pro-democracy protests, South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

Tensions have been high in the Chinese autonomous province since Beijing announced it would adopt a new national security law for Hong Kong which could ban protests altogether. Meanwhile, lawmakers in Hong Kong started debating a piece of legislation on Wednesday that would make it a criminal offense to insult the Chinese national anthem.
