After the U.S. president threatened to impose additional new tariffs on eight European countries, gold and silver prices hit fresh records on Monday, buoyed by heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
In early Asian trading, the price of gold surged to a record high of $4,690.59 an ounce, while silver also climbed to a new all-time peak of $94.12 an ounce.
By way of reminder, Donald Trump escalated pressure on the European Union on Saturday by pledging to roll out a wave of increasingly steep tariffs on eight European countries, including France, accusing them of playing a “very dangerous game,” until the United States is able to purchase Greenland, in line with his stated objective.
