President of the Republic, Kais Saied, met yesterday with Fathi Zouhair Nouri, Governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia, who submitted him with the annual report from the Tunisian Financial Analysis Commission (CTAF).
During the meeting, President Saied underscored the vital role of the CTAF in combating illicit foreign funding, especially those intended for associations operating in Tunisia for political purposes.
Significant Foreign Funds Received by Certain Associations
President Saied voiced deep concern over the substantial sums some associations receive from abroad, emphasising how these funds are often employed to influence Tunisia’s political landscape illegally. He pointed to two prominent examples: one association had received nearly 9.57 million dinars by August 28, while another had received 255.5 million dinars.
These cases, according to the president, represent only a fraction of the numerous suspicious transactions occurring in the country.
Strengthening CTAF Vigilance
The president reiterated that the CTAF must strengthen its efforts to monitor and investigate foreign financial flows, identifying suspicious funding sources. He emphasised that the Commission should have been informed of these transactions and must, in turn, forward the most concerning cases to the judicial authorities.
Kais Saied strongly denounced such foreign interference, calling it a blatant violation of Tunisian law and an affront to national sovereignty. He warned that these funds are direct attempts to manipulate Tunisia’s political affairs at a time when the country is striving to stabilize its institutions.
A Call for Transparency and Strict Law Enforcement
President Saied urged the CTAF to take stronger actions in monitoring incoming financial flows, especially those aimed at associations. He called for transparency and strict law enforcement to end these practices and safeguard Tunisia’s independence and stability.
This meeting highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening the oversight of foreign funding and addressing its impact on Tunisia’s political landscape, calling on the CTAF to play a more active role in the fight against money laundering and illicit funding.
