Ayachi Zammel is one of the three candidates who have just been definitively qualified by the ISIE, which asserted its authority over the Administrative Court, as reported by the president of the electoral body, Farouk Bouasker. Nevertheless, Zammel is currently entangled in legal troubles, with a new case that could potentially derail his campaign. This could result in only two remaining participants in the presidential race: the incumbent, Kais Saied, and Zouhair Maghzaoui.
As of now, the public prosecutor has not made a judgment, according to Sondes Nouioui, spokesperson for the Manouba Court of First Instance. Hence, Zammel officially remains a candidate for the presidential election on October 6, despite his detention at dawn on Monday, September 2, for alleged sponsorship fraud.
Ms. Nouioui informed the official news agency that the politician is still under judicial inquiry following complaints from 11 people who allege that their data was used to sponsor this candidate without their consent.
Lawyer Faouzi Jaballah, quoted by the same source, stated that the citizens who claimed to have been wronged, along with Zammel’s brother, were questioned before his arrest this morning. Ramzi Jebabli, spokesperson for Zammel’s campaign, mentioned that these investigations are related to a new case currently being handled by the National Guard, which is unrelated to the others.
It is worth noting that the Court of First Instance of Tunis 2 had decided on August 29 to delay the trial for falsification of sponsorships until September 19. Consequently, the sword of Damocles hangs more than ever over the head of the third candidate in the upcoming presidential election.
