President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, welcomed Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Carthage Palace, Samir Abid, Minister of Trade and Export Development.
This meeting focused on several crucial points, including the surge in prices, especially those of poultry, the costs of which have reached unprecedented levels, while being sold outside the usual distribution channels. Other products such as red meats, vegetables, and fruits, as well as basic foodstuffs such as sugar and coffee, are also undergoing shortages or unexpected fluctuations. These products appear in abundance in some regions, then quickly vanish elsewhere.
President Kais Saïed recalled that the State has the right to set the prices of several products and that it must quickly find solutions to this abnormal situation. He also underscored the need to enforce the law against speculation and monopoly, to regulate the market.
Similarly, the Head of State gave instructions for the constitution of strategic reserves on certain products, notably milk, due to the decline in production during this period. He insisted on the need for collaboration between all State bodies to counter the practices of speculators and monopolists, who take advantage of parallel circuits for illicit gains, often for criminal purposes.
