Putin Says He Wants to Expand Ties with Baghdad

    Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iraqi President Abdel Latif Rashid on Friday on the sidelines of an international forum held for the International Year of Peace and Trust in the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat.

    Putin said Russia is determined to develop its relations with Iraq, noting that many Russian companies are showing interest in cooperation.

    He said: “Our relations are diversifying and becoming more comprehensive. We are committed to continuing our work and our cooperation.”

    The Kremlin leader added that several Russian firms are already operating in Iraq and are keen to continue their activities in the Republic of Iraq.

    Putin also said Russia supports Iraq’s territorial integrity and the government’s efforts to stabilize the country, arguing that “the situation in the region requires ongoing consultations.”

    He added: “We have always supported Iraq’s territorial unity and backed the country’s leadership’s efforts to stabilize [the situation]. You can be certain that our position is principled.”

    Putin also invited his Iraqi counterpart to visit Russia: “We will be pleased to welcome you to Russia at any time that suits you. I would like to reaffirm that we will regard this as an official invitation, and we will coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this matter.”

    Finally, Putin said he and Rashid always have the opportunity to stay in touch and speak, adding: “We will remain in contact.”
