Real Madrid have suffered another setback at a delicate moment, a day after their shock Copa del Rey exit to Albacete. French star Kylian Mbappé is now widely expected to be a major doubt for Saturday night’s home game against Levante at the Santiago Bernabéu.
According to French daily L’Équipe, Mbappé is still experiencing pain in his left knee. The newspaper notes that although the issue has eased, the France international has not yet regained the level of fitness required to play at a high intensity.
Mbappé featured only briefly in the Spanish Super Cup final against FC Barcelona in Saudi Arabia, before missing the cup tie against Albacete, which ended in a stunning elimination for Álvaro Arbeloa’s side.
Despite taking part normally in training at the Valdebebas complex on Thursday, the coaching staff, in consultation with the player, opted not to take any risks with the club’s top scorer this season (29 goals), particularly with a crucial Champions League clash against Monaco looming on Tuesday in the penultimate round of the group stage.
