Return of potatoes imported via Sousse port to Turkey

The cargo of 2,758 tons of spoiled potatoes, imported from Turkey, left the commercial port of Sousse this Saturday, November 30, 2024, to return to its country of origin.

The court declined the request for authorization to destroy this quantity on Tunisian soil, due to the hazards it could represent. The decision to return the cargo was taken after the fulfilment of the necessary investigations and administrative procedures.

This case started on November 29, 2024, when the Sousse Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an inquiry into the importation of these spoiled potatoes, intended for a private Tunisian company. The 2,758 tons were to be distributed in several wholesale markets, including Sousse, Kairouan, Mahdia, Jem and Tunis. However, the condition of the products led to the intervention of the judicial authorities.

The supplier of the cargo has been in custody since November 25, 2024, as part of the investigation entrusted to the Sousse Judicial Police Brigade.

This case highlights the significance of strengthening health controls on imported food products, in order to guarantee the safety of Tunisian consumers.
