Speaking with Tunisie Numérique, President of the Tunisian Organization for Consumer Guidance,Lotfi Riyahi described the current ride-hailing apps employed for individual taxi services in Tunisia as a “major catastrophe” for consumers.
Riyahi explained that these apps have led to an increase in prices, making taxi services unaffordable for many, especially in the absence of an alternative due to the public transport crisis and the deteriorating infrastructure. This situation has turned the use of individual taxis into a need, rather than an exception.
He added that in Greater Tunis, the fare can sometimes reach as high as 50 to 60 dinars, which has encouraged taxi drivers to operate these apps, further complicating the issue. He pointed out that these practices have created a social divide, where one group of people can afford to use these apps while another group cannot.
Our speaker urged the Ministry of Transport to interfere and suspend the use of these apps until the sector is properly regulated and necessary measures are implemented to ensure public transportation services are accessible to all Tunisians.
