Riahi Confirms Decline in Sales Season Demand and Calls for a Review of the Discount Law [Video]

On Wednesday, Lotfi Riahi, President of the Consumer Guidance Organization, confirmed an apparent decrease in demand for the 2025 winter sales season. He attributed this mainly to franchise agreements under original brand names and the marketing of low-quality foreign products at high prices.

In a statement to Tunisie Numérique, Riahi called for a review of the sales law and these types of franchise agreements, which have increased unemployment rates and contributed to the closure of Tunisian factories due to the excessive importation of foreign products at the expense of local ones.

He also admitted that the decline in demand is partly due to the decreasing purchasing power of Tunisians and the poor quality of products, leading to customer reluctance.

Concerning violations observed by the Consumer Guidance Organization, Riahi noted that they remain similar to previous years, mainly the failure of retailers to display the required three-tier pricing, as well as mixing discounted items with new, full-priced products—confusing customers.

He urged that discounts should apply to all products displayed within commercial spaces.
