Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, Jamel Sghayer, a farmer from Menzel Temime, highlighted the serious challenges facing local farmers and called for urgent intervention by the authorities.
According to his testimony, the issue extends beyond recent flood damage. Rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion have affected agricultural lands, leading to the destruction of essential crops such as onions, carrots, and leafy vegetables.
He explained that the losses have been accumulating for months, placing significant strain on small-scale farmers who lack the financial capacity to cope with such environmental challenges.
Although farmers contribute 1% of their income or transactions to the Natural Disaster Fund, he noted that the impact of this mechanism remains limited compared to the scale of the damage.
In response to the worsening situation, Sghayer called on Kaïs Saïed to intervene and provide direct support to affected farmers to help them recover and safeguard their livelihoods.
