Veteran Spanish defender Sergio Ramos officially announced on Sunday that he is leaving the Mexican club Monterrey, after playing his final match in the domestic league. The announcement follows the team’s elimination in the semi-finals of the Mexican league.
The news came immediately after the match, bringing his stint in Mexican football to an end.
Ramos’ statements put an end to the speculation surrounding his future in recent weeks, particularly after the team’s coach, Domènec Torrent, had said he did not know whether the Spanish defender would remain with the club until 2026. Ramos ultimately clarified the situation directly from the pitch, just after the final whistle.
Sergio Ramos is one of the last remaining members of Spain’s golden generation, which won the 2010 World Cup, following the retirements of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who concluded their careers in MLS with Inter Miami. With the end of his Mexican chapter, another phase closes in the career of a player who has previously worn the colours of Sevilla FC, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
