Sfax Hosts a Promising University Project on Waste-to-Energy Recovery and Freshwater Production [Video]

The city of Sfax has hosted a study day dedicated to the launch of a project titled “Energy Recovery from Non-Recyclable Waste and Freshwater Production Using an Alternative Fuel.” The event was organized by the National Engineering School of Sfax, in collaboration with the Higher School of Science and Technology of Jemmel Sousse, the National Engineering School of Gabès, and several economic stakeholders.

This project marks a major step forward in strengthening scientific research and innovation in the fields of renewable energy and environmental sustainability in Tunisia. It brings together academic expertise and private-sector know-how, with a focus on recovering energy from non-recyclable waste, developing desalination technologies, and innovating in the use of alternative fuels. The aim is to reduce waste, improve environmental quality, and produce potable freshwater.

The project seeks to transform waste into usable energy sources while developing new techniques for using alternative fuels in freshwater production. It forms part of a broader national strategy to harness available resources in innovative and sustainable ways.

The program also includes training workshops, scientific meetings, and end-of-study activities, as well as the establishment of research contracts. These initiatives are expected to strengthen the skills of young researchers and advance knowledge in this vital field.

In addition, the project promotes enhanced cooperation between universities and private companies to pool researchers’ efforts, support scientific research at the national level, stimulate innovation, and create new opportunities for sustainable development.
