The Sfax-South branch of the Tunisian League for Human Rights marked the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by presenting the book Sfax of Rights: Challenges and Achievements (1978–2010), authored by writer and human rights activist Fathi Hammami.
The book revisits a pivotal period of activism in the governorate of Sfax and highlights the figures and rights-defence structures that worked to entrench the values of freedom and democracy within society, underscoring the role of human rights struggle in building a future that respects fundamental rights.
Fathi El Hammami said the aim of the book is to reaffirm the importance of this struggle and to show that Sfax has preserved a strong human rights legacy, noting that the region is home to many activists who faced repression and authoritarianism in the pursuit of freedom and the expression of rights.
Considered a rich historical document, the book features narratives and analysis, alongside documents, minutes, figures and data attesting to the continuity of human rights activism in Sfax, and highlighting activists’ contribution to building a better future rooted in human rights and their history.
