Six years in prison for civil servant accused of embezzlement of public funds

The criminal chamber of the Tunis First Instance Court has condemned an employee of a tax office in the capital to six years in prison, along with a fine.

This decision follows accusations of embezzlement of public funds, a crime committed in the course of his duties.

Investigation Initiated in 2023
The case dates back to 2023 when the legal representative of the Ministry of Finance filed a complaint reporting a shortfall in funds from the sale of tax stamps during a routine audit at one of the tax offices in Tunis.

The initial results of the inquiry quickly pointed suspicions toward an employee of the office, leading to his indictment and referral to court to answer the charges against him.

Exemplary Sanction
The sentence reflects the seriousness of the actions: in addition to the prison term, the employee will also have to pay a financial fine.

This case emphasises the judicial authorities’ commitment to fighting corruption and financial misconduct in public institutions, particularly those responsible for managing state finances.
