South Korea: President banned from leaving country after short-lived declaration of martial law

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing severe charges over his controversial attempt to inflict martial law. Amid political turmoil, the Justice Ministry reported

Bae Sang-up, a senior immigration official, confirmed the ban during a parliamentary hearing. When asked by a lawmaker whether President Yoon was being prevented from leaving South Korea, Bae replied in the affirmative: “Yes, that’s correct.”

The move comes amid tense political conditions, days after the president briefly proclaimed martial law before backtracking under pressure from opponents and mass protests.

Investigation for rebellion
The South Korean president is under probe for “rebellion,” an extremely serious charge in a parliamentary democracy. The attempt to impose martial law has sparked outrage in the country, which many see as a direct attack on democracy and the rule of law.

According to political analysts, the travel ban is intended to guarantee that the president remains available to investigators throughout the legal process.

An unprecedented political crisis
Yoon Suk Yeol’s situation illustrates a major political crisis in South Korea. The country, which has made democratic transition an example in East Asia, now finds itself plunged into institutional instability.
