Spain-Catalonia Places 200,000 People Under Coronavirus Lockdown

An area near the Catalan town of Lerida with about 200,000 people was placed under lockdown on Saturday following a surge in new coronavirus cases, Catalonia’s regional president Quim Torra confirmed on Saturday.

“We have decided to confine the del Segria zone following data confirming a sharp rise in COVID-19 infections,” Torra told reporters. Nobody will be allowed to enter or leave the area.

The lockdown is the first since Spain ended its state of emergency on June 21.
