Spain Rejects Trump’s “Peace Council” Initiative

Spain has confirmed that it will not take part in the “Peace Council” initiative launched by US President Donald Trump to address global conflicts, stressing that the decision is consistent with its commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations system.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday after a European Union summit in Brussels, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said: “We appreciate the invitation, but we decline it,” underlining Madrid’s attachment to international law and the UN framework.

Washington argues that the Peace Council would help mediate ceasefire agreements, oversee their implementation, organize security arrangements and coordinate reconstruction efforts in war-torn regions. The concept reportedly stems from President Trump’s peace plan for the Gaza Strip.

However, the launch ceremony of the Council, held on Thursday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was marked by the absence of traditional US allies, including Canada, the United Kingdom and all EU member states, with the exception of Hungary and Bulgaria.

Sánchez pointed out that one of the main reasons behind Spain’s refusal is that the initiative does not include the Palestinian Authority, which, in his view, undermines the credibility of any serious effort aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
