Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, Dr Mohamed Fares Ben Hadid, a sports and family physician, warned about the risks of overtraining during Ramadan.
He explained that the body functions differently due to changes in eating patterns and reduced meal frequency, making it essential to adjust training routines.
Warning signs not to ignore
Athletes should immediately stop exercising if they experience:
-
Persistent or extreme fatigue
-
Unusual drop in performance
-
Higher-than-normal resting heart rate
-
Mood changes, irritability, nervousness
-
Ongoing muscle pain
-
Lack of motivation and reduced concentration
If training takes place before Iftar, dizziness, weakness, or faintness require an immediate stop.
Adapt, don’t quit
Dr. Ben Hadid advises against intense training during Ramadan but stresses that athletes should not stop exercising altogether. Instead, they should reduce intensity and training volume.
He also highlights two essential factors:
✔️ Adequate and regular sleep
✔️ Proper hydration between Iftar and Suhoor
These measures help maintain performance while minimizing injury and dehydration risks.
