Stellantis Turns the Page on Tavares, Appoints Antonio Filosa as CEO

A new chapter begins at Stellantis. At 52, Italian executive Antonio Filosa has been named as the successor to Carlos Tavares at the helm of the world’s fourth-largest automaker. This strategic appointment aims to restore cohesion within a group rocked by internal tensions, bloated inventories, and criticism over an overly rigid leadership style.

The contrast between the two leaders is stark: while Tavares was known for his austere and top-down management, Filosa represents a more accessible and unifying leadership approach.

A Fiat veteran since 1999, Antonio Filosa is a quintessential product of the Italian-American automotive ecosystem. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano, he rose through the ranks of Fiat Chrysler both before and after its 2021 merger with PSA that gave birth to Stellantis. Hailing from Naples, Filosa has a deep understanding of the company’s culture and the complexities of transatlantic management. He has held several key positions, including Chief Operating Officer for Stellantis in the U.S., where he earned the respect of car dealers across the country.

His method: listening, proximity, and agility. Upon taking over the American market last fall, he immediately tackled inventory optimization — a chronic pain point for dealerships. The result: a swift easing of supply chain congestion and a renewed sense of confidence on the ground. His leadership at Jeep in 2023, one of the group’s flagship brands, had already been praised for injecting new momentum into a marque that had lost its edge.

Filosa’s appointment is no accident. He is seen as the natural heir to Fiat’s legacy, yet brings the strategic distance needed to navigate a group defined by its diverse identities. Endorsed by John Elkann — grandson of Gianni Agnelli and chairman of Stellantis — Filosa is also a former close associate of Sergio Marchionne, the architect of Fiat’s turnaround. This symbolic lineage may help reassure teams wearied by successive waves of restructuring.

As Stellantis faces a host of critical challenges — accelerated electrification, competition from China, and brand portfolio streamlining — Filosa’s hands-on operational experience could prove to be a decisive asset. He embodies the blend of tested industrial vision and human-centric leadership that the company hopes will restore a sense of unity.

Whether this new face can truly reinvigorate a machine in search of fresh momentum remains to be seen. But for now, Antonio Filosa has already achieved what many could not: generating broad-based support around his leadership.

And in the auto industry, that’s already worth far more than a simple change in direction.
