The regional committee in charge of organizing maritime excursions to La Galite Island approved on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the applications of two Tunisian tourism companies. The meeting, held at the Bizerte Governorate headquarters and chaired by Governor Salem Ben Yacoub, concluded with the granting of licenses for operation during the upcoming summer season.
The two approved operators will provide leisure and discovery trips to the island, departing from the Tabarka marina, after having met all the required regulatory conditions.
Strict Requirements to Protect the Environment and Ensure Safety
The committee—composed of representatives from the regional offices of tourism, the Coastal Protection and Development Agency, civil protection services, the maritime guard, the commercial maritime authority in Bizerte, as well as local government representatives—emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the sector’s regulatory framework.
Key priorities include:
Maritime safety in passenger transport
Environmental protection
Preservation of the island’s unique natural heritage
Committee members also stressed the need to uphold all legal and security procedures, while calling for real-time monitoring by the relevant authorities.
A Natural Gem off Northwestern Tunisia
Located about 81 kilometers from Bizerte and 60 kilometers from Tabarka, La Galite is the largest island of an archipelago that shares its name. The island covers 752.3 hectares and rises to a peak elevation of 391 meters above sea level. Known for its rugged beauty and rich biodiversity, La Galite is a prime destination for the development of ecotourism in the region.
An Archipelago with Many Facets
In addition to the main island, the La Galite archipelago includes several other notable islets:
Galiton and Fochalle Islands, located 3 kilometers southwest of La Galite
Les Chiens Islands, a group of three small islets situated to the northeast of the main island
Still relatively unexplored, this natural heritage site is increasingly attracting visitors interested in marine discovery, diving, and hiking within a protected and regulated setting.
An Opportunity for Sustainable Tourism
With this regulatory milestone, local authorities aim to make the La Galite archipelago a flagship destination for sustainable tourism in Tunisia. The initiative seeks to balance visitor access, passenger safety, and the conservation of a unique ecosystem. The first excursions are expected to begin in the early weeks of summer.
