Syrian Red Cross urges West to lift bans against Damascus

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent urged for the unilateral sanctions against Damascus to be repealed in order to help the nation deal with aftermath of the “catastrophic” tremor that struck the northwest of Syria on February 6, the head of the organization Khaled Hboubati said on Tuesday.

“We need heavy equipment, ambulances and fire brigades to speed up search and rescue operations. To do this, it is necessary to remove sanctions against Syria as soon as possible,” Hboubati said during the press conference in Damascus. Dr. Bachir Tajaldin, the director of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), told CNN that there is no central government in charge of the “multi-sectoral response” in northern Syria and emphasized that the majority of services are offered through humanitarian aid and NGOs (non-governmental organizations).
