The assistant secretary-general of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), Salah Eddine Salmi, said the resignation of the organisation’s secretary-general, Noureddine Taboubi, is an unprecedented development in the history of the union.
“Backtracking on what was agreed” in three administrative meetings
According to Salmi, Taboubi’s decision is tied to what he described as a reversal of agreements reached during three meetings of the administrative commission. In his words, this backtracking is what “forced Taboubi to resign”.
Criticism of the executive bureau and rejection of a “power struggle”
Salmi stated that “the situation cannot be fixed with patchwork solutions,” adding that “the logic of a power struggle has no place and will not pass.” He also criticised the executive bureau, saying it was “unable” and “unwilling” to defuse the crisis, as he put it.
Call for an exceptional national administrative commission meeting
Salmi urged members of the national administrative commission to shoulder their responsibilities and convene an exceptional national session “as soon as possible” to examine ways out of what he described as an unprecedented crisis within the UGTT.
He stressed that the administrative commission is “the decision-making body,” arguing that it is “natural to return to it and refer to it in the event of disagreements.”
