Tebboune: France is responsible for cleaning up its waste

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune stated that France must decontaminate nuclear waste in Algeria and that historical memory must be properly addressed.

In an interview with French media, Tebboune said, “The remnants of history must be dealt with seriously, and we will not accept solutions that simply sweep its effects under the rug.”

He stressed that the matter is now in “the hands of the Élysée to prevent an irreparable separation,” according to reports from the Russian news agency Sputnik.

Tebboune also accused France’s Interior Minister of attempting to undermine Algeria politically by seeking to deport an Algerian influencer. He further claimed that “France pursues Algerian activists on social media while protecting criminals and saboteurs by granting them citizenship and asylum.”

Algeria has urged France to fully assume its historical, moral, and legal responsibilities in dealing with the radioactive waste left behind.

Tebboune underscored that “the cleanup of nuclear waste in Algeria is a humanitarian, moral, political, and military obligation for France.”

It is worth noting that France conducted 17 nuclear tests in the Algerian desert between 1960 and 1966, and Algeria is now demanding the decontamination of these radioactive remnants on its soil.
