In a statement to Tunisie Numérique, Thuria Tabassi, Vice President of the Consumer Protection Organization, said today that white meat, particularly scallops, has recently met a shortage in markets and points of sale, accompanied by a price increase despite the pricing fixed by the Ministry of Supervision.
Tabassi attributed the issue to multiple issues in the production and distribution chain for both producers and distributors. The most major factor is that the current pricing does not cover production costs, leading some producers and distributors to withhold supplies from points of sale, which has caused the shortage. Further, retail sellers have been hesitant to sell whole chickens, preferring instead to sell them in parts, which has driven up prices.
She likewise remarked on other natural factors contributing to the decline in production, such as the recent rise in temperatures, which caused the death of a significant number of poultry.
Tabassi reassured that this situation is momentary and that the Consumer Protection Organization has received assurances from the Ministry of Supervision and production complexes to make white meat available in the markets starting next week, with prices set to be more affordable for Tunisian consumers.
