The United Kingdom is bracing for a wave of flooding following Storm Joretti, which brought strong winds and heavy snowfall, prompting authorities to issue more than 100 flood alerts and warnings across the country.
The national meteorological service, quoted by the British daily The Telegraph, said that melting snow combined with rainfall is increasing the risk of flooding, particularly in the East Midlands region of central England.
The storm triggered power outages affecting thousands of households, caused major disruption to train and ferry services, and led to the cancellation of dozens of flights. It also inflicted significant damage to homes and trees, especially in the county of Cornwall, in the far south-west of England.
Against this backdrop, the opposition has called for an emergency meeting of the senior government crisis-management committee, “COBRA,” to address the storm’s fallout and support those affected.
