The university ophthalmology department of the regional hospital Hédi Jaballah in Tozeur inaugurated on Tuesday the first medical simulation unit dedicated to eye surgery training within Tunisia’s public hospital system. The launch was marked by the first simulated operation (a trial procedure) performed by resident doctors, focusing on cataract removal.
Regional Health Director Abdelrazek Lamoushi told TAP that this unit is the first of its kind nationwide within ophthalmology departments of public hospitals, even though similar simulation spaces exist in medical faculties and nursing schools. He emphasized the unit’s role in strengthening residents’ practical skills in a safe educational setting, in line with the principle: “the first time is never on the patient.”
He added that the opening and the first simulation procedure were followed live by the Minister of Health, as part of efforts to support pedagogical activities. The simulation room will also be accessible to physicians from other public hospitals, especially in neighboring regions, for further training sessions.
