Amid the lack of cultural centers across most of Tozeur’s delegations, the Regional Council held a working session with the Regional Delegate for Cultural Affairs to address the challenges facing the cultural sector and explore concrete solutions to the shortage of cultural spaces, seen as a key driver of local development and cultural tourism.
The meeting reviewed recent cultural events in the region, such as “Ruhaniyates of Nefta”, and discussed preparations for the Tozeur International Oasis Festival, one of the most prominent events in southern Tunisia. The regional delegate stressed the importance of diversifying funding sources to ensure the sustainability and quality of cultural festivals.
According to Council President Hamza Troudi, discussions mainly focused on delayed cultural projects, particularly the construction of cultural centers in Tozeur, Nefta, Hazoua, and El Mahassen (Degache delegation). The region currently has only three cultural houses, in Hamma El Jerid, Tamaghza, and Degache — a number considered too limited to foster a vibrant local cultural life.
Council members voiced concern over slow administrative procedures despite the allocation of necessary funds and urged the authorities to speed up project implementation to provide local youth with creative and cultural spaces that could help restore Tozeur’s cultural influence.
