The National Road Safety Observatory has urged road users in the southern regions to exercise caution this Wednesday afternoon, following a sudden deterioration in weather conditions.
According to the Observatory, sand-laden winds and sand whirlwinds have been reported, significantly reducing visibility on several roadways.
Safety recommendations for drivers
In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the Observatory stressed the need to strictly comply with road safety rules. Drivers were advised to reduce speed, switch on vehicle and motorcycle headlights, and increase safe following distances.
The authority also called for heightened caution regarding objects that may be carried by strong winds, while recommending that vehicle windows be closed and air conditioning switched on to limit the entry of dust and sand.
What to do in case of zero visibility
In the event of complete loss of visibility, the National Road Safety Observatory urged road users to exit the roadway and park in a safe location away from traffic, while activating hazard warning lights.
The Observatory also issued a specific warning to individuals suffering from allergies or respiratory difficulties, advising them to avoid driving under such weather conditions except in cases of absolute necessity.
