Train Derailment in Russia: At Least Seven Dead… Ukraine Suspected of Blowing Up a Bridge

Russian authorities announced early Sunday morning that at least seven people were killed and 30 hospitalized after a bridge collapsed and a train derailed in the Bryansk region of Russia, on the border with Ukraine.

Russian Railways reported via Telegram that the locomotive and several train cars derailed “due to the collapse of a section of the road bridge following unlawful interference with traffic.”

Alexander Bogomaz, governor of the Bryansk region, reported via Telegram that two children were among the injured, one of whom was in critical condition. Russian state news agencies, citing paramedics, reported that the train driver was among the victims. The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said its main efforts were focused on finding and rescuing the victims, and that about 180 people were involved in the operation.

The Russian television channel Baza, which regularly broadcasts information from security and law enforcement sources, reported that initial reports indicated the bridge had exploded, without providing any evidence.

Reuters was unable to independently verify this information. Ukraine did not immediately respond.

Russian Railways said the train was traveling between the town of Klimovo and Moscow. The governor of Bryansk said the train hit a collapsed bridge in the Vygonichsky district, about 100 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

An investigation has been opened as a terrorist act.
