Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday declared an early election in Canada, a move he announced was needed to give his government a mandate for dealing with the pandemic and the recovery from its economic effects.
“Canadians should have their say,” Mr Trudeau said after asking Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament to permit the snap election. “It’s time we should have a national conversation, a national direction on next steps.”
The federal election in the country will take place on September 20, two years ahead of schedule.
