Trump Brings Immigration Issue Back to the Forefront: Heartbreaking Testimonies of Families Deported Without Their Children

The immigration policy of Donald Trump is once again making international headlines, with poignant testimonies from Latino families separated from their children at the U.S. border. On May 1, the Spanish newspaper El País revealed two recent cases that have reignited the debate over the methods employed by the Trump administration as it makes its return to the White House.

Kailyn’s Story: A Cuban Mother Separated from Her Child

The first testimony, reported by El País, involves Kailyn, a Cuban mother who has been living in the U.S. for several years. During a routine check, the caregiver was expelled without her one-year-old baby, who was left behind on American soil. According to her husband, Carlos, immigration agents didn’t even give her the time to say goodbye to the child, explaining that the infant, a U.S. citizen, could not leave the country. Kailyn’s expulsion occurred last April alongside other Cuban migrants, despite her desperate pleas.

In response to this situation, Democratic Congresswoman Kathy Castor sent a letter to Donald Trump, condemning the actions as “inhumane” and “illegal,” and calling for humanitarian parole to allow the mother to reunite with her child.

Antonella’s Case: Venezuelan Toddler Separated from Her Parents

The second case involves Antonella, a two-year-old Venezuelan girl separated from both of her parents, who were expelled to Venezuela and El Salvador. U.S. immigration services justified the separation by alleging the parents’ ties to the criminal gang “Tren de Aragua”—an accusation based solely on their tattoos and family connections, despite neither parent having a criminal record.

Since their expulsion, the parents claim to have received no news of their daughter. They do not know where she is, who is taking care of her, or in what conditions she is living. According to relatives, the mother has been resorting to sleeping pills to cope with the anxiety and distress.

A Grim Echo of the First Trump Presidency

These revelations bring to mind the painful episodes of Trump’s first presidency, which saw the separation of thousands of migrant families at the border. Upon taking office, Joe Biden promised to end such practices, signing several executive orders in favor of family reunification. However, with Trump’s return to power and the hardening of immigration policies, rapid expulsions and parent-child separations seem to be resurfacing, sparking outrage among human rights organizations.

A Reignited Debate on Security and the Human Impact of Immigration Policies

As the United States approaches a new presidential election, these testimonies have reignited a broader debate about security excesses and the human toll of immigration policies. For the affected families, a return to normalcy still seems a distant hope.
