Trump Says He Was Invited by Xi Jinping to China, Proposes Meeting in the U.S.

As trade tensions between Washington and Beijing remain high, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, June 5, 2025, that he had been “graciously invited” by Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit China. The statement was made via Truth Social, the personal social media platform of the Republican leader, following a phone call between the two heads of state the previous day.

According to Trump, the official invitation was extended in a constructive atmosphere.

He noted that he reciprocated by inviting Xi Jinping to make a visit to the United States, emphasizing his intention to maintain direct dialogue between the world’s two leading powers, despite ongoing disagreements on several fronts, particularly in international trade.

The news was partially confirmed by a Chinese state-run media outlet, which reported that President Xi expressed openness to a visit from the American leader, though no date for such a trip has yet been set.

The announcement comes amid continued customs and technology-related tensions between the world’s two largest economies, which have strained bilateral relations.

Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has taken an increasingly hard line against certain Chinese trade practices, even floating the idea of imposing new import tariffs on key strategic goods.

Trump previously visited China during his first term in office, in November 2017, for a state visit that featured a lavish reception in Beijing.

At the time, trade issues and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula topped the agenda.

A potential summit between Trump and Xi Jinping would mark a strategic turning point in a volatile diplomatic climate, just ahead of a new round of trade negotiations.

It remains to be seen whether the exchange of invitations will materialize in the coming months—and whether it could help ease some of the friction points in U.S.-China relations.
