According to Ahmed Hammam, the Director General of the National Institute of Meteorology, the institute plans to acquire and install a network of meteorological surveillance radars covering the entire territory of the Republic.
He confirmed the launch of an international tender to acquire five radars, explaining that these tenders will be opened in April 2025.
He stressed the importance of the aforementioned radar network in preparing accurate weather forecasts and establishing an early warning system. He added that these five radars will be installed in the north (two units), the centre (two units), and the south (one unit) to guarantee effective coverage of all Tunisian regions and to enable real-time measurement of precipitation levels.
The official underscored that the Institute is also operating on other projects, including acquiring a production system for meteorological monitoring services, especially services intended for aviation. As a result, flight records containing meteorological monitoring data will be electronically transmitted to aircraft crews.
He explained that the Institute will also launch another tender before May 2025 to acquire and install a third-generation satellite image reception and processing station. Additionally, the Institute will develop the network of air traffic monitoring stations in airports by purchasing new runway equipment, as well as expanding the implementation of the “ISO 9001” quality management system to cover all activities and services of the Institute.
These ongoing projects are part of the Integrated Disaster Resilience Program (2022–2027), which was approved following the floods that hit the Nabeul governorate in September 2018. This program consists of four main areas: improving flood risk reduction in urban areas, strengthening preparedness for natural disasters, enhancing institutional coordination, and creating an environment conducive to climate risk and disaster management by establishing a permanent disaster resilience structure.
