The International Organization for the Protection of Children in the Mediterranean has raised the alarm following a series of murders of several children.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the organization highlighted two heinous crimes that cost the lives of a 4-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, considering these two crimes as the latest in a series of bloody crimes to which children have been subjected or wounded.
The organization alerted against what it describes as the normalization of murders and violence, calling it a dangerous indicator that could signal the disintegration of society.
It stated that current laws, or those specific to child protection, are no longer deterrents. Additionally, security measures in response to these crimes have proven to be limited, particularly considering the intersection of murder with other crimes, such as drug consumption and trafficking, which dehumanize the perpetrator.
It called for the development of a national project and a proactive protection plan in which the guardian plays a central role in monitoring, raising awareness, and providing information.
According to the organization, it has also become necessary to implement sanctions that are not currently being applied for such crimes.
It urged the President of the Republic to intervene to protect and establish the required legal frameworks to safeguard children’s rights to a safe life, recommending that parents exercise the utmost vigilance in caring for their children and strengthen their monitoring of both their internal and external environment.
It also called on judges to impose the harshest penalties on criminals who assault and steal the lives of children, emphasizing the role of security agencies in conducting preventive campaigns in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, and the transfer of individuals suffering from mental illness and drug addiction to detention centres or specialized centres to prevent them from committing such heinous crimes.
The organization also urged the media to play its role in raising awareness about the dangers of drugs and delinquency.
