Tunisia–Algeria : Agriculture at the Heart of Strengthened Bilateral Cooperation

A working meeting was held yesterday, Thursday, between Tunisia’s Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh, and his Algerian counterpart, Yassine El Mehdi Walid, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, on the sidelines of the 23rd session of the Tunisian-Algerian Joint High Commission and the Tunisian-Algerian Economic Forum, held in Tunis.

According to a statement released by the ministry on Friday, the talks reflect both sides’ determination to reinforce cooperation mechanisms, accelerate development momentum in key sectors, and explore new prospects for Tunisian-Algerian partnership in priority areas for both countries—particularly those related to agriculture.

Key topics discussed included addressing water scarcity and preserving natural resources amid climate change, expanding the use of non-conventional water resources, and improving the efficiency of traditional water resource management.

Discussions also covered cooperation in fisheries, forestry, and the development of border areas between the two brotherly countries, as well as the use of modern technologies in agriculture to strengthen resilience and enhance water and food security—considered national priorities in light of the climate and water challenges facing both Tunisia and Algeria.
