Tunisia: Carthage yields an alabaster mask dating back to the late 4th century BC

    The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has announced that on the evening of Tuesday, November 4, 2025, an alabaster mask dating back to the late 4th century BC was discovered during excavation work at the temple of the god Baal Hammon and the goddess Tanit, on the Tophet site in Carthage.

    The mask depicts a woman with a hairstyle typical of the Phoenician tradition. The discovery sheds light on one aspect of the rites and practices carried out in this sacred space. According to the scientific team, the mask was most likely offered as a votive gift to the deities.
