The third United Nations Ocean Summit kicked off on June 8, 2025, in Nice, France, and will run through June 13. This major international event brings together representatives from around the world to address critical issues related to the protection of seas and oceans.
A Multisectoral Tunisian Delegation in Nice
Tunisia is participating in the summit with a delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti. The delegation includes representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Water Resources, Fisheries, and the Environment, reflecting a coordinated and cross-sectoral approach to marine challenges.
Antonio Guterres Calls for Global Action to Protect Oceans
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres launched the summit with messages to the international community, emphasizing the urgent need to protect the oceans. He warned of the threats facing marine ecosystems, including the collapse of fish stocks, plastic pollution, ocean acidification, and rising ocean temperatures caused by carbon emissions.
Guterres called for global action to restore marine biodiversity, strengthen maritime safety, and integrate ocean priorities into climate and food policies.
Tunisian Diplomacy Bridging Africa and the Mediterranean
Mohamed Ali Nafti was invited to participate in two key events held on the sidelines of the summit: the Africa Summit for the Ocean and the Mediterranean Summit for a Shared Future. He highlighted Tunisia’s strategic location between Africa and the Mediterranean and its commitment to developing national strategies for the protection and sustainable use of marine resources.
He also noted Tunisia’s involvement in cooperation projects with the European Union, especially in the field of renewable energy, citing the Elmed electricity interconnection project as an example.
Call for a Mediterranean Charter and Solidarity with Gaza
The minister expressed support for the UN Secretary-General’s call to establish innovative mechanisms for financing sustainable development. He advocated for the preparation of a Mediterranean Charter based on a shared vision among European and Mediterranean countries, centered on common interests and regional stability.
On this occasion, he referred to the tragic situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, highlighting the impact of this conflict on the future of the entire Mediterranean region.
Meeting with the Tunisian Community in Southern France
On the sidelines of the summit, Mohamed Ali Nafti met with members of the Tunisian community living in southern France. He inquired about their living conditions and listened to their concerns.
The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to improving consular services in France. He announced the upcoming opening of a consulate in Montpellier and a consular office in Ajaccio, Corsica, with plans to further expand Tunisia’s consular network in the country.
