The Tunisian General Directorate of Customs announced on Friday, December 5, 2025, that its units at the Ras Jedir border crossing successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a significant amount of foreign currency and gold out of the country.
According to the official statement, customs officers seized $945,700 — equivalent to over 2.8 million Tunisian dinars — along with six gold bars weighing a total of 14.6 kilograms. The items were cleverly hidden inside a specially designed compartment in a vehicle carrying two individuals preparing to leave Tunisian territory.
The illegal operation was uncovered during meticulous inspection procedures at the departure lanes of the border post. The unusual setup of the vehicle raised officers’ suspicion, leading to the discovery of the concealed cash and gold.
A report of seizure was issued immediately, and upon consultation with the Public Prosecutor, the case was referred to the competent security services for further investigation to identify all parties involved in the trafficking network.
This operation is part of intensified efforts by Tunisian customs to combat the illicit outflow of national wealth and foreign currency, which poses a serious threat to the country’s economic stability.
