Tunisia – Customs warn about importation of currencies into Tunisia

 
The official spokesperson of the General Directorate of Customs and head of the operations sub-department of the Customs Guards Administration, Brigadier General Chokri Al-Jabri, stated that “a citizen who arrives from abroad with sums of money in hard currencies for 20 thousand dinars or more is mandated to declare them upon entry into the Tunisian country and to keep the exchange receipt.
 
He clarified, speaking to a private radio station, that “every citizen must declare it before being subjected to the examination of the customs agent”, noting that “if the agent discovers it before the declaration, he will be seized and a report will be opened to this effect. Al-Jabri added: “A citizen who desires to deposit a sum of money in hard currency into a bank account must declare it and produce the declaration upon entry.” He cautioned Tunisian citizens living abroad against “giving money in hard currencies to members of their family”, explaining that “money in hard currencies is solely given to banks , at post offices or manual exchange offices.” He added that “the citizen can keep the amount he declared upon entry, for the whole duration of his stay in Tunisia,” remarking that “any individual who leaves the country and returns and then declares this amount is considered as in violation of the law”. In a related context, Al Jabri revealed that customs has made available to Tunisians coming from abroad the “Smart Traveler” application, which is installed on smartphone devices and includes a set of information and practical advice related to customs, procedures and procedures for travelers, including Tunisians abroad, upon their entry and stay as well as their departure from Tunisia.
