Tunisia – Djerba: 15 Dead, Including Three Babies, in Sinking of Migrant Boat

The toll of the sinking of a migrant boat this morning at dawn off the island of Djerba amounts to 15 victims after 3 new bodies were recovered this evening, after 12 other corpses have been retrieved since morning, according to a security source.

The same source underscored that the bodies, including three babies and women, were discovered following research operations that began from where the boat had sunk, then the area of Research expanded by exploiting all capacities and with the participation of the Southern Maritime Guard region, the Marine Region of Djerba Zarzis, Civil Protection and the National Army.

The same source added that four diver teams partook in the research operation, as well as guards and a helicopter belonging to the general administration of the sea guard, adding that the research operations stopped during the night and will resume tomorrow morning.

According to the prosecutor at the Médenine Court of First Instance, Fathi al-Baccouch, two individuals who organized the irregular migration operation were identified and are on the run, and the identity of a third person in connection with the incident is being identified. The judicial source had revealed that a judicial investigation had been opened concerning an attempted migration of illegal Tunisia.
