Tunisia-Dr. Reem Kafi reveals alarming numbers about diabetes [video]

According to the International Diabetes Federation, the world population suffering from diabetes has exceeded 530 million, a figure emphasised by Dr Reem Al-Kafi, a lecturer at the Pasteur Institute and leader of a research team, on Thursday, February 15, 2024.

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique,Dr. Kafi stressed the severe long-term complications linked with diabetes, which can adversely impact the kidneys, eyes, and brain, and even lead to death. Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, she remarked that global statistics show a person dies from diabetes or its complications every five seconds.

Given these alarming figures, Dr. Al-Kafi called for the implementation of numerous awareness campaigns. She pointed out that in Tunisia, the prevalence of diabetes is estimated to be between 18% and 23%.

Furthermore, Dr. Kafi shed light on a concerning issue: a substantial number of people with diabetes remain undiagnosed. She disclosed that awareness and screening campaigns previously conducted have consistently identified undiagnosed diabetes in 10% to 20% of participants.
