Tunisia-Egypt : Push to boost trade and explore new investment opportunities

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Mohamed Ali Nafti began his activities in Cairo on Sunday with a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad Dr Badr Abdelatty.

According to a statement issued by the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers welcomed the strong and longstanding relations between the Republic of Tunisia and the Arab Republic of Egypt. These ties were notably reinforced by the convening of the Joint High Commission under the supervision of the two heads of government, which produced significant results in several areas, including the economy, trade, culture and consular affairs.

The two ministers pledged to encourage institutions in both countries to turn these outcomes into concrete action, particularly by increasing the pace of bilateral trade, facilitating the flow of national products in both directions and exploring joint investment opportunities in Tunisia and Egypt.

They also stressed the importance of developing technical cooperation between the specialized agencies of the two countries in support of Islamic states, particularly in Africa.

Coordination on Arab and regional issues

The two officials also discussed several Arab and regional issues on the agenda of the 166th session of the Council of the League of Arab States, as well as the need to coordinate efforts to reach consensual solutions on these matters.

At the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart, Mohamed Ali Nafti also took part in the seventh dialogue meeting between the technical cooperation agencies of member states of the Islamic Development Bank.

On this occasion, the minister delivered a speech in which he recalled Tunisia’s experience in technical cooperation mechanisms with Islamic countries, an experience dating back to the 1970s.

He stressed the close link between security and development in building a genuine partnership capable of strengthening South-South cooperation and supporting expertise and human capacities across the Islamic world.

In this context, Mohamed Ali Nafti praised the role played by the Islamic Development Bank since its establishment in the mid-1970s.

    Memorandum to strengthen triangular cooperation

The Tunisian and Egyptian ministers also presided over the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between the Tunisian Agency for Technical Cooperation and its Egyptian counterpart.

The agreement aims to establish a framework for triangular cooperation among countries of the Global South, opening new prospects for the joint use of Tunisian and Egyptian expertise and skills for the benefit of Arab and African countries.

Tunisia to assume presidency of the Arab League Council

On the instructions of President of the Republic Kais Saied, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Mohamed Ali Nafti will take part on Monday in Cairo, at the head of a Tunisian delegation, in the 166th ordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States at ministerial level.

The session will focus on the latest developments in the Arab region, particularly in the Palestinian territories, amid the continuing attacks on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, described as “barbaric” in the Tunisian statement.

Discussions will also cover other Arab issues and the main areas of cooperation among Arab countries in the fields of development, the economy, social affairs and security.

During the Cairo meeting, Tunisia will assume the presidency of the Arab League Council at ministerial level for the period from September 2026 to March 2027.

According to the ministry, Tunisia intends to make its presidency a framework for dialogue, consultation and coordination, while supporting efforts to strengthen Arab consensus and bring viewpoints closer together, with the aim of reinforcing a unified Arab position and enabling a collective and responsible response to the challenges facing the region.
