Tunisia-EU:Any financial support to Tunisia need to be accompanied by the return of parliament

The European Parliament issued a press release in which it discussed the political situation in Tunisia as well as the state of emergency which has been decreed by the President of the Republic Kais Saied. The EU expressed concern at the serious challenge confronting the democratic transition in Tunisia, calling on Kais Saied to restore the parliament and secure the rule of law.
“Any reform of this system is conducted with complete respect for the constitutional order, and in particular the separation of powers, and with the full guarantee of fundamental freedoms and human rights,” the statement read. The same source further stressed the need to set up a national dialogue, in coordination with the social partners and civil society organizations to surmount the political and constitutional crisis, underlining in this respect the critical role of the General Tunisian Labor Union (UGTT) and the importance of including young people and women in this dialogue.
The European Parliament asserted the fact that any financial support to Tunisia must be accompanied by the restoration of the parliament and respect for the rule of law and civil and human rights. It further reiterated calls for the establishment of mechanisms to monitor respect for fundamental freedoms, gender equality and other human rights issues, with the participation of civil society.
