Tunisia–European Union relations: a new direction for parliamentary diplomacy

The Bardo Palace hosted, last Thursday, a new step in strengthening Tunisia’s parliamentary diplomacy, with the establishment of several parliamentary friendship groups with member states of the European Union.

Friendship groups with six european countries

According to a statement released by Parliament, parliamentary friendship groups were officially formed with France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Romania and Greece.
This initiative is part of efforts to further structure parliamentary relations between Tunisia and its European partners.

The creation of these groups was announced during a meeting chaired by Ibrahim Bouderbala, President of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People, with the parliamentary cooperation group with European Union countries.
The meeting was held in the presence of the Parliament’s Vice-President, Anouar Marzouki.

Strengthening structured and coherent parliamentary action

On this occasion, the President of the Assembly stressed that the establishment of these friendship groups falls within a broader approach aimed at supporting organised, efficient and structured parliamentary work, based on a unified vision and a coherent strategy in relations with friendly parliaments.

He underlined the importance of adopting a harmonised approach to enhance the credibility and effectiveness of Tunisia’s parliamentary action on the international stage.

    Parliamentary diplomacy supporting official diplomacy

Ibrahim Bouderbala also highlighted the central role of parliamentary diplomacy in supporting the country’s official diplomacy.

He emphasised the need for full alignment with state orientations and decisions, in strict respect of the constitutional prerogatives of the legislative institution.

Finally, the Speaker of Parliament called on the newly established parliamentary friendship groups to clearly define areas and priorities of cooperation with their European counterparts, with the aim of strengthening Tunisia’s visibility internationally and consolidating its strategic partnerships.
