The medical team of the cardiology department at Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis successfully carried out, on 8 December 2025, the first procedure in Tunisia to treat coronary artery calcification using intravascular shockwave technology.
The patient, a 58-year-old man, was suffering from a severe and heavily calcified coronary artery stenosis.
The medical team succeeded in breaking up the calcified deposits using an intracoronary lithotripsy balloon, before placing a drug-eluting stent that restored normal blood flow through the artery.
The intervention was performed under the supervision of Professor Habib Ben Ahmed and the catheterization team, led by Professor Leila Bezdah, and in coordination with Professor Aymen Abbassi from the clinical pharmacy department.
This medical achievement marks a major advance in interventional cardiology in Tunisia and demonstrates the ability of national specialists to master the latest cutting-edge technologies used worldwide.
