“It is not at this age that I will start a career as a dictator” President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, stated on his arrival at Brussels where he is taking part in the summit bringing together the leaders of the European Union and the African Union on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 February 2022. The Head of State responded to a question from a reporter on the accusations of dictatorial drift. After paraphrasing the famous quote from General De Gaulle, Kaïs Saïed added: “I am a constitutionalist. I can solely be reminded of the rule of law and institutions”.
Questioned about his expectations of this summit, he told another journalist: “to open new perspectives in regards with the European Union and the whole world. Today we have joined a new phase of history. We need new ideas and we likewise need new concepts (…) The whole world has entered a new era of history. Let’s be at the rendezvous with this new story.
In another statement, this time granted to an Arabic-language media, he said he had come to Brussels to speak about the “causes that led us to this situation and the means that will permit us to get out of it”, in reference to the entire African continent. He noted, in this sense, the significance of cooperation on an equal footing.
