During a field visit to the Qara’a Fatnasa area, Zorgata district, by a delegation from Menzel El Habib, Gabes governorate, it was decided to form joint teams from the governorates of Gabes, Gafsa, and Sidi Bouzid to monitor, detect, and treat desert locusts in order to eradicate them and prevent their spread.
During this field visit, along with local authorities and regional agricultural delegates from the three governorates, Gabes Governor Radhwan Nsibi monitored the efforts to monitor and treat desert locusts and noted the results of these treatments. The local desert locust vigilance and control committee of Menzel El Habib treated more than 52 hectares of land in Qara’a Fatnasa and El Hamila yesterday, Sunday, after detecting locust swarms.
An aerial treatment operation also began today, covering the Hajr area in El Hamma, covering an area of 300 hectares. The operation will continue in several planned areas in El Hamma and New Matmata. The Gabès Regional Delegation for Agricultural Development announced, in a press release published late last week, the launch of an aerial campaign to combat desert locusts in the delegations of New Matmata and El Hamma. The press release specifies that this campaign will cover the area west of the Gabès-Matmata airport and the regions of El Marta, Oued Souinia, and Hadjer. The delegation called on all farmers to take the necessary precautions, including removing beehives and flocks of sheep from the areas to be treated and refraining from grazing there for a week after treatment.
