Tunisia – Gabes: Strengthening the regional transport company’s bus fleet

The Regional Transport Company of the Gabès Governorate is set to acquire 20 new buses as part of an international public contract for the acquisition of 418 new buses for national and regional transport companies, according to the Minister of Transport. This information was provided in response to a question from Issam Bahri Jaberi, a Member of Parliament representing Gabès.

Additionally, the company stated in the same response—published by the MP—that its fleet will be further strengthened with 25 used buses, anticipated to be delivered before the next school year. It also plans to purchase 21 new buses as part of its investment program.

Since the start of the current school year, Gabès has been facing a transportation crisis due to a decline in the company’s operational fleet. This issue stems from the ageing and excessive use of its buses, leading to many being taken out of service.

The decline of the fleet has reduced the number of buses available for school and university transport from 115 to 86, with frequent daily breakdowns due to their poor condition, according to an official from the company speaking to Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP).
